Bach Flower Remedies

Bach Flower Remedies are a system of healing discovered by Dr Edward Bach in the 1930s.

There are 38 plant-based solutions, which treat emotional conditions such as Mental Torture (Agrimony) and Self-Disgust (Crab Apple). They are distilled in brandy and taken in droplets: neat, you can take it, diluted in water if not.

Scan the list of remedies and decide which ones are applicable to you.

Unfortunately, to start they may all appear to be applicable to you.
I praise the Bach Flower Remedies, yet some of my cynical friends say its their placebo effect or even that tiny doses of brandy throughout the day are bound to make anyone feel better. Even I don't understand how a tincture of flowers can boost confidence or make one less impatient - yet they seem to do so. Interestingly enough, the Bach Flower Remedies produce excellent results with children, who don't question their efficacy, and with also with animals, who can't either.

Dr Edward Bach, developer of the Bach Original Flower Remedies, was a Harley Street doctor and well known Physician, Bacteriologist, Homeopath and Researcher. Despite the success of his work with orthodox medicine he felt dissatisfied with the way doctors were expected to concentrate on diseases and ignore the people who were suffering from them.

He was inspired by his work with homoeopathy but wanted to find remedies that would be purer and less reliant on the products of disease. So in 1930 he gave up his lucrative Harley Street practice and left London, determined to devote the rest of his life to a new system of medicine that he was sure could be found in nature.

Dr Bach believed that attitude of mind plays a vital role in maintaining health and recovering from illness and wanted to find something that treated the cause rather than the symptom. After identifying 38 basic negative states of mind and spending several years exploring the countryside, he managed to create a plant or flower based remedy for each one.

In 1934 he decided to settle down and create a centre for his work, and chose Mount Vernon, a small cottage in Sotwell, Oxfordshire, UK. He spent the last years of his life at Mount Vernon, also known as the Bach Centre and it was here that he completed his research.

Hering’s Law of Cure

Sandra Ramacher reports on what we refer to, today, as Hering's Law of Cure.

Constantine Hering, M.D. (1800-1880) observed that healing occurs in a consistent pattern. He described this pattern in the form of three basic laws which homeopaths can use to recognize that healing is occurring.

 Constantine Hering

She mentions that this pattern has been recognized by acupuncturists for hundreds of years and is also used by practitioners of herbalism and other healing disciplines.

Sandra goes on to say, "As the symptoms change in accordance with Hering’s Law, it is common for individual symptoms to become worse than they had been before treatment. If healing is truly in progress, the patient feels stronger and generally better in spite of the aggravation. Before long, the symptoms of the aggravation pass, and leave the person healthier on all levels".

She ends by saying that most conventional doctors treat each symptom as a unique and unconnected phenomenon. A person’s skin rash generally would be treated with cortisone, thus suppressing it, and, possibly, reactivating the person’s asthma. The mentally ill person’s new physical symptom is also suppressed, leading to a relapse of the mental illness.

The Indian Department of AYUSH (alternative systems) has recently released a press note suggesting the use of Arsenic alba 30 one dose for three consecutive days as preventive for Swine Flu.

It has the approval of Director General Health Services and Ministry of Health & Family Welfare.

This has come after a study by Experts of "Genus Epidemicus" (Common symptoms of suffering patients vis a vis the repetorised drug). In this study Arsenic alba covered 80% of the symptoms.

Regarding exploring the scope of Homeopathy, homeopathic medicines in H1N1 virus (swine flu) prevention and treatment, Dr. Anil Singhal, MD (Homeo), a homeopathic physician and consultant in Gurgaon, near New Delhi proposed guidelines related to:

- prevention (a genus epidemicus with symptoms from H1N1 patients)
- prevention with nosode (prepare H1N1 influenzinum)
- post influenza treatment (follow-ups to note any effects, and to prevent any chronicity as per miasm theory), and other similar aspects.

"In the second week of August, I suggested Arsenic alba homeopathic remedy as a prophylactic homeopathic medicine for H1N1 flu. With some of my views on H1N1, I believe, we all can work together to make this world H1N1 free" says Dr. Anil Singhal, MD(Hom.), visiting faculty to Nehru Homoeopathic Medical College & Hospital, New Delhi, Dr. B. R. Sur Homoeopathic Medical College & Hospital, New Delhi, and Bakson Homoeopathic Medical College & Hospital, Greater Noida.

Homeopathic Remedies for Healing Broken Bones

Homeopathic remedies can help speed the healing of broken bones. Bones have the amazing ability to heal themselves, and this healing begins before you even see a doctor. However, doctor’s visit is always recommended to ensure that the bones are aligned properly and will join in a clean line.
repair.

Arnica
In any homeopathic first aid, Arnica is the first drug of choice. Its remarkable ability to reduce bruising and swelling from trauma has been well documented. Arnica can be used immediately after the break, to reduce swelling and vascular congestion.

Symphytum
The homeopathic remedy Symphytum, or Comfrey, has been known for centuries as Knitbone. It has a remarkable ability to speed the healing of bones. Symph is a great remedy when the bone refuses to knit together and also if the pain remains long after the fracture is healed. Herbalists have long used comfrey, or Knitbone. The roots and leaves contain Allantoin, used in wound healing. Culpepper suggested a salve made from powdered root in water applied externally. But the homeopaths have found Comfrey’s usefulness in broken bones when taken internally. Doses of Symph 30c taken daily have sped up bone healing by one-third.

Ruta
To treat bruised bones and for bones that are slow to repair. Ruta is also beneficial to the connective tissues around the bones and the periosteum. This remedy is indicated if the pains are worse from the cold and damp.

Calcarea phoshoricum
A homeopathic remedy also used as a tissue salt, sold in 3x potency. The salt is essential in facilitating the union of broken bones. The homeopathic indication for this remedy is bones that are slow to heal and a cold sensation in the limbs. The pain is worse at night and in cold, damp weather.

CALCAREA CARB, CALCAREA PHOS, RUTA and SYMPHYTUM are all useful for bones that fail to heal.

Eupatorium perfoliatum
Known as Boneset, Eup perf heals the bones and the pain. The pain experienced by a person needing this remedy is a deep soreness, as if beaten, that are worse by motion and in the morning.

HOMEOPATHIC TREATMENT SUGGESTION FOR BROKEN BONES
As soon as the trauma occurs, begin daily treatment with Arnica 30c. When the swelling is reduced, continue taking Symphytum 30c daily until the bone is healed. Use other remedies as indicated by their modalities and symptoms.

OTHER THERAPIES
In 1994, ultrasound bone growth stimulators were approved by the FDA. Treatments are available to speed certain types of broken bones with the use of electrical stimulation, ultrasound, and magnets. Magnets increase blood flow to the area, thereby speeding healing.
Deep tissue massage and techniques like cranio-sacral massage can increase blood flow and send healing energy. A study at Harvard University showed that hypnosis can be used to reduce bone healing time from eight weeks to six.

Bones heal without scars and most of the time the bones are stronger than they were before the break. Rest, eat a healthy diet, and you will be back to normal in no time

Also consider:

NUTRITION

Protein
Because the bones need protein to build, add proteins to your diet. Meat, fish, soy, nuts, beans, and dairy are all good sources. Dairy has the added advantage of containing calcium.

Calcium
Recommended dose (RDA) is 800-1200 milligrams a day for adults. There is no research to suggest that adding calcium speeds bone healing, but be certain to maintain normal intake levels.

Vitamins

•Vitamin C is important link in the formation of collagen. Adding more fruits and vegetables to your diet can fill this need.
•Vitamin D aids in calcium absorption. The latest suggestions for vitamin D consumption have raised the minimum required dose from 2,000 to 4,000 daily. http://www.healthnews.com/blogs/mela...lth/vitamins-s... sure to take in that much while healing bones.
•Vitamin K, found in leafy greens, also aids bone

LIFESTYLE CHANGES

Quote:
•Stop smoking. Smoking slows the blood flow to the bones, thereby slowing healing. Smokers take longer to heal broken bones.
•Stop drinking. Alcohol slows the formation of the osteoblasts.
•Decrease or eliminate caffeined drinks like coffee, tea, and colas which increase calcium excretion. Since your body needs all the calcium it can get to heal your bones, it is wise to minimize sources of calcium loss.

Homeopathy & Acupuncture backed by NHS Funding

In Northern Irelamd, Homeopathy, Acupuncture and reflexology are among a range of complementary and alternative therapies a new trial concludes should be provided on the NHS.

The major new Government-funded study found there would be a range of benefits to patients in providing access to complementary and alternative medicine, and that the treatments could even save the health service money.

As many as 81% of patients receiving the treatments on referral from their GP reported improvements in their physical health, and 79% in their mental health.

The study, carried out in Northern Ireland and commissioned by the province’s Department of Health, Social Services and Public Safety, found 84% of patients directly linked improvements in health to the therapies they received.

Treatments administered after referral from local GPs included acupuncture, homeopathy, chiropractic, osteopathy, reflexology and aromatherapy.

In 65% of cases, GPs reported a health improvement in patients, while half said they prescribing less medication during the course of the trial, and that their patients needed less frequent referral to hospital.

More than 700 patients from different demographic groups were referred to therapies for musculoskeletal or mental health conditions through nine GP practices in Belfast and Londonderry.

The researchers concluded: ‘Not only has this project documented significant health gains, but also the potential economic savings likely to accrue from a reduction in patient use of primary and other health care services, a reduction in prescribing levels and reduced absenteeism from work.

‘It is recommended that DHSSPS and the project partners examine ways of integrating complementary and alternative medicine within primary care.’

Dr Anne McCloskey, a GP in Londonderry whose practice took part in the pilot, said the scheme had been ‘brilliant’ for patients, but should have gone on for longer.

She said: ‘Overall it was very positive. Our patients loved them, but the scheme wasn’t big enough to prove definite benefits. It should have gone on for longer.’

Dr Michael Dixon, medical director of the Prince’s Foundation for Integrated Health and a GP in Cullompton, Devon, said the study was a big breakthrough for complimentary medicine.

‘Patients have clearly benefited – and so has the health service,’ he said. ‘This trial shows an integrated approach is practical and works in well in NHS primary care.’

Homeopathy & Health

According to Maurice Tate, "There are two main healing concepts that are the cornerstone of Homoeopathy’s effectiveness:

1 The Law of Similars (’like cures like”) - means matching the symptom picture of an illness or injury to the symptom picture of the homoeopathic remedy.

A substance that causes certain symptoms can cure them if used in tiny amounts prepared in a certain way. A remedy for heart palpitations uses coffee, which can cause them, and the cure for insect stings is made from bees.

2 The Law of Minimum Dose - means using as little of the remedy as possible to stimulate the body’s own healing mechanism. Homoeopaths give one or two doses of a remedy and then wait to see what relief it brings. Giving the body more than it needs can be a backward step towards cure".

Homeopathy

He also mentions that homeopathic remedies are diluted so many thousands of times that, according to some scientists, there can’t be anything of the original substance left in the pills or drops people take. Yet homoeopaths understand that the more the remedy is diluted, the stronger and more effective it becomes.

Maurice goes to say that homoeopathy is a wholistic system of medicine - i.e. it treats the whole person not just the disease symptoms. It's remedies are diluted so many thousands of times that, according to some scientists, there can’t be anything of them left in the pills or drops people take. Yet homoeopaths understand that the more the remedy is diluted, the stronger and more effective it becomes.

Homoeopathy is an energetic system of medicine like Acupuncture and Chinese Medicine.

These systems of medicine appreciate that the human body is made of two different systems - physical systems and energy systems. Like all matter in the Universe, humans are made of both matter and energy. Orthodox medicine treats the physical body whilst Homoeopathy is able to treat both the physical body as well as the energetic part of us that we can’t actually see.

What is Homoeopathy?
According to Mr Tate, Homoeopathy is a natural pharmaceutical science based on the principle of “like cures like”. If a patient comes with a headache of a particular type they are given a small dose of an agent known to cause a similar type of headache. So the two cancel out.

Homoeopathy views symptoms as the body’s own attempts at self healing and that any suppression of these symptoms (such as conventional drugs) will drive the disease or imbalance further into the body, only to emerge as a different set of symptoms or problems at a later date. Homoeopathy treats the person and not the disease - it is an individualised system of medicine that aims to treat the cause of disease and not just the symptoms.

What are homoeopathic medicines made of?
They are derived from plant, animal and mineral sources that are diluted many hundreds of times. These extremely dilute potencies stimulate the body’s own defense system and allow the body to heal itself. The remedies are very safe, gentle and do not have toxic side effects. Homoeopathic remedies can be taken simultaneously with conventional medications and are safe to use on infants, pregnant mothers, the elderly and the chronically ill.

Can Homoeopathy treat all health problems?
Generally speaking yes. It is a system of medicine that stands alone, just like Chinese medicine. There may be times when surgery or conventional medication is necessary but this is rare. Homoeopathy has the potential to cure chronic diseases and often does.

Homeopathy News from London UK

On 1st April, The Royal London Homeopathic Hospital in United Kingdom entered a challenging new era when it became a self-governing National Health Service NHS Hospital Trust. Staff, pateints, members of the Board of management and homeopathic supporters marked the historic occassion with a day of celeberation.

 Homeopathy

It was an event of special significance to those who through the Hahnemann Society and the magazine, Homeopathy Today, had campaigned on behalf of the hospital against many resource cuts and threats of closure over the years. This was the birth of a new day, providing much needed opportunities for the development of services at the Royal London Homeopathic Hospital and the expansion of homeopathics in the NHS throughout the country.

"Many of homeopathy great names have passed through the hospital's doors and contributed to its work. It can be justfiably proud of it record of service to the sick," as Dr Peter Fisher, RLHH consultant Physician, recorded in the magazine four years ago when the hospital celebrated its 140 th anniversary.

For 140 years, 24 hours a day, 365 days a year, it has provided high quality homeopathic medicine without interruption, even despite being bombed in the 1940s. This unique record, unrivalled by any other institution in the world, has given the RLHH unparalleled experience of the care of acutely, seriously and terminally ill patients with homeopathy. The hospital is a major international centre not just for practice of homeopathy but also for research and training of doctors.

Homeopathy Study shows Postive Outcome

Madeleine Ennis

New Scientist, UK reports that Madeline Ennis, a pharmacologist at Queen’s University, Belfast, was the scourge of homeopathy. Historically, she railed against its claims that a chemical remedy could be diluted to the point where a sample was unlikely to contain a single molecule of anything but water, and yet could still have a healing effect. That was until she set out to prove once and for all that homeopathy was bunkum.

In her most recent paper, Ennis describes how her team looked at the effects of ultra-dilute solutions of histamine on human white blood cells involved in inflammation.

These “basophils” release histamine when the cells are under attack. Once released, the histamine stops them releasing any more. The study was replicated in four different labs. They all found that homeopathic solutions which are so dilute that they probably didn’t contain a single histamine molecule, worked just like histamine.

Ennis admits that an effect cannot be ruled out.

What is the explanation?
Homeopaths prepare their remedies by dissolving substances like charcoal, deadly nightshade or spider venom in ethanol, and then they dilute this “mother tincture” in water again and again. Homeopaths claim, that no matter what the level of dilution, the original remedy leaves some kind of 'imprint' on the water molecules. So, however dilute the solution becomes, it is still maintains the properties of the remedy.

Ennis remains sceptical. No homeopathic remedy has ever been shown to work in a large randomised placebo-controlled clinical trial. But the Belfast study (Inflammation Research, vol 53, p 181) suggests that something is going on.

“We are unable to explain our findings and are reporting them to encourage others to investigate this phenomenon. If the results turn out to be real, the implications are profound: we may have to rewrite physics and chemistry", says Madeleine Ennis PhD .

Pioneer work in this field was conducted by French scientist, Jacques Benveniste who maintained that water does remember.

Samuel Hahnemann, the Father of Homeopathy.

Samuel Hahnemann was a German physician. He earned his Doctor of Medicine degree in 1779.

Samuel_Hahnemann

At that time scientific advances were beginning to be seen in the fields of chemistry, physics, physiology and anatomy. The clinical practice of medicine, however, was filled with superstition and lack of scientific protocol. The treatments of the day were purgatives, bleeding, blistering plasters, herbal preparations and emetics. They lacked a rational basis and were often more harmful than effective.

Hahnemann recognized this and wrote very critically about the practices of the time in several papers on topics like Arsenic poisoning, hygiene, dietetics and psychiatric treatment.

When he was translating William Cullen's Materia Medica into German, he was struck by a passage that dealt with cinchona bark, which was then used to treat malaria. Cullen described its mechanism of action as a function of its stomach-strengthening properties. Hahnemann did not like this explanation.

He experimented by taking "four good drams of Peruvian bark, twice a day for several days" to attempt to characterize the action of the quinine-containing bark. He wrote that he began to develop symptoms identical to those of malaria.

Thus he concluded from this personal experiment that effective drugs produce symptoms in healthy people that are similar to the diseases they are expected to treat. This principal is now known as the "Law of Similars" and is the basis for the use of the term homeopathy i.e. similar suffering.

Hahnemann and colleagues began to test various substances to determine the types of symptoms they produced. These results suggested to Hahnemann what the drugs would be useful to treat.

He thought that doses of these substances that produced overt symptoms would be inappropriate for treatment of diseases with the same symptoms. So, he suggested that there be a reduction of the dose to infinitesimal levels by multiple serial dilutions of ten or hundred fold .

Soluble compounds or liquids were diluted in alcohol; insoluble materials were serially diluted by grinding with lactose. He compiled his results into a treatise called the "Organon of Rational Therapeutics" which he first published in 1810. The sixth edition, published in 1921, is still used today as homeopathy's basic text. Hahnemann practiced Homeopathic medicine for almost 50 years until his death in 1843

Homeopathy had a large impact on the practice of medicine. The first homeopathic hospital opened in 1832 and homeopathic medical schools opened all over Europe. Homeopathic hospitals and practitioners often had better outcomes compared to their allopathic counterparts. These improved outcomes were because of the harmful nature of allopathic medicines of the time compared to the non-toxic nature of homeopathic remedies. So, the public in general began to tout the benefits of homeopathy and demand better treatment from all physicians.

Allopathic medicine began to develop rational approaches to the study of disease, partially due to the competition offered by homeopathy and began to make significant gains by the end of the 19th century.

By the early part of the twentieth century, homeopathy was in serious decline. This was due to several reasons including the funding at Carnegie and Rockafeller awarded to allopathic medical schools and the Flexner Report which supported the use of allopathic medicine. The last 'pure' homeopathic medical school in the U.S. closed in 1920, although Hahnemann Medical School in Philadelphia continued to offer homeopathic electives until the 1940's.

Homeopathy began to enjoy a resurgence in the US in the 1970's as the public took a greater interest in holistic and natural approaches to medicine. Today it is used widely, all over the world. Modern scientific advancements have permitted homeopathy to be understood with the realm of 'energetic medicine'. The greatest benefit of its use is due to the fact that it is not only effective but also safe. And it may be used for children and adults alike, of any age.
